Discomfort of uncertainty or absurdity of certainty: navigating uncertainty in an evolving world

Summary of the Talk

This talk will explore the concept of uncertainty tolerance which defines our thoughts, feelings and actions when faced with the unknown. We will discuss the factors that influence our uncertainty tolerance, and why our brains seek the comfort of certainty, sometimes at the expense of joy. Finally we will discuss practical steps we can engage to sit in the discomfort and navigate uncertainty to the betterment of ourselves and society.

Speaker Bio

MICHELLE D. LAZARUS, SFHEA, PhD, is a Professor and the Director of the Centre for Human Anatomy Education. She is a globally sought after speaker and an award-winning educator having received the Australian Universities Teaching excellence award, and multi-book author having written the “The Uncertainty Effect: How to Survive and Thrive through the Unexpected” and “The AI (R)evolution: Valuing Country, Culture and Community in a World of Algorithms” among others. An underlying motivation of her outputs are a focus on democratisation of knowledge - or accessible and available knowledge for all. Her entire career is a journey into uncertainty.
