Barbara Adam
Future Matters: Action, Knowledge, Ethics
Summary of the Talk
Social lives are lived prospectively with intent and visions of what will, could and should be. However, this social futurity is not merely hoped for, expected and/or anticipated, it is also enacted continuously in everyday and institutional practices. Yet, to encompass this central feature of plans and actions poses great challenges for all evidence-based knowledge practices, where the future is assumed to be not-yet, thus not factual. In my reflections, on the Summer School’s theme of the ‘Art and Science of Uncertainty and the Future’, I examine some of the anomalies that arise for institutional practice that explicitly pursue responsible future making. I will explore some openings for change and encourage the participants to engage with challenges that arise in their respective spheres of influence.
