Unanticipated or unintended consequences? Disentangling conflated concepts

Presenter: Steffan James, Cardiff Business School, Cardiff University

Summary

This research examines the often-conflated concepts of unintended and unanticipated consequences in operations and supply chain management. Drawing on social theory and literature from multiple disciplines, it develops a framework based on intentionality and anticipation to give a more holistic understanding of actions and their consequences.

By distinguishing between anticipated and unanticipated unintended consequences, the research provides greater conceptual clarity and offers practical guidance for when existing tools, such as forecasting or risk management, are effective.
